A co-captain in football, baseball and golf as a senior, John Staley was a stand out on the school's first three undefeated football teams and played the entire game during the 1956 Tangerine Bowl. The team MVP on the line in 1956, he also received All-State, All-East and Little All-America honors. A native of Natrona Heights in western Pennsylvania, he earned 14 collegiate letters and was clearly one of the most versatile athletes in Juniata history. He was a Dapper Dan Golden Gloves finalist in 1953, light heavyweight Altoona section champ in 1956 and a heavyweight section finalist in 1957. He played semi-pro football from 1958-62 and recreational league baseball and basketball until age 45. The 1969 Dapper Dan Man of the Year, he was elected to the Allegheny-Kiski Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 1982 and was nominated for the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.
