A four-year letter winner on the defensive line and starter as a freshman for Juniata's 1973 Stagg Bowl team, "Stu" was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Northern Division first team all-stars after his sophomore and junior seasons. As a junior, he was named to the ECAC first team and was the conference MVP. As a senior tri-captain and preseason All-America pick, he went on to earn MAC North honorable mention at nose guard and was again named an ECAC first team all-star. He led the team in total tackles in 1975 and 1976. Also a standout at nearby Huntingdon High School, he earned several ECAC Weekly All-East honors during his collegiate career and was honorable mention AP All-State as a sophomore.
