Eagles Move to 2-0 with Win at Thiel

Taylor Metz

GREENVILLE, Pa.- The Juniata women's lacrosse team pulled away in the second half in their win at Thiel, 19-8, Saturday afternoon at the R-S Dome.

The Tomcats scored the game's first goal and led 2-0 in the first seven and a half minutes. Talia Bertrando (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick) cut the deficit in half with a free position goal, and Isabella Michener (Randolph, N.J. / Randolph H.S.) knotted things at 2-2 12 seconds later. Thiel retook the lead less than a minute later, but goals from Shayla Lapp (Lancaster, Pa. / Lampeter-Strasburg), Bertrando off a Michener assist, Taylor Metz (Oaklyn, N.J. / Paul VI H.S.) off a pass from Michaela Naccarini (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill H.S.), Fiona McDonald (Langhorne, Pa. / Neshaminy) and a second from Metz made it 7-3 a little over midway through the half.

The Tomcats got within two, 7-5, but Bertrando tallied two more goals and found Metz for another as the Eagles led 10-5 heading into the locker room.

Metz struck twice in the first five minutes before the Tomcats sandwiched to goals around a Lapp goal off a Paige Riker (Sussex, N.J. / Vernon Township) assist to make it 13-7.

The Eagles dominated the final 20 minutes of the game to the tune of 6-1 to seal the 19-8 victory.

Juniata outshot Thiel 41-28 and had a narrow edge in ground balls, 25-20.

The Eagles will host Mount Aloysius, Wednesday at 7:00.
