Eagles Soar Past Lions in Home Opener

Eagles Soar Past Lions in Home Opener

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- Juniata scored early in both halves as they defeated visiting Penn State Altoona 2-0 Wednesday evening at Gibbel Stadium.

Amelia Yordy had a goal and an assist, Savanna Murray had one goal, while Alyssa Bui had one assist. Julia Lane made two saves in goal for the Eagles to get the win.

Three minutes into the game, Bui won a loose ball, took a touch to draw the defender, and played Yordy in towards goal. The junior forward took a touch before dinking the ball off the far post and in to give Juniata an early lead.

The Eagles kept up the pressure as shots by Haydn Paxton and Mady Fleisher forced saves from the PSU Altoona keeper.

JC led 1-0 at the break. They outshot the Lions 8-0 in the first half and had a 5-0 edge in corners.

The Eagles threatened early in the second half, as Murray drew a save from the visiting keeper, and Yordy ripped a shot off the post.

Seven minutes into the second half, Fleisher got to a ball in the Juniata half, dodged a defender near the midline, and played a through ball to Yordy. She took a touch before a sliding effort went past the keeper to the far post, but this time bounced away from the goal. Murray was there to tap it in and double the Eagle lead.

The Eagles managed 11 more shots the rest of the way but couldn't find the back of the net.

Lane was called upon late in the 84th minute as a PSU Altoona freekick came flying over the wall. She managed to push it up and off the crossbar to keep the shutout.

Juniata returns to action at home on Saturday when they will take on Notre Dame (Md.) at 1:00.
