Eagles Draw Highlanders

Fiona McDonald

LANGHORNE, Pa.-The Juniata women's soccer team drew at Cairn, 0-0, Saturday afternoon.

In the 18th minute, Brooke Rotheram (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin East) tested the Cairn keeper for the first time in the contest but her low shot towards the left half of the goal was saved. Seven minutes from half time it was Fiona McDonald's (Langhorne, Pa. / Neshaminy) turn, firing low and to the right side but again the Highlander keeper turned the shot away.

The Eagles held a 5-2 edge in shots at halftime and took one corner to Cairn's zero.

Saraly Gonzalez (Stratford, N.J. / Sterling High School) had the only shot on frame of the second half for the Eagles in the 52nd minute; she put it low and to the left but it was again denied. Neither team broke through so the teams went into overtime.

In the first overtime, McDonald fired a low shot towards the middle of the frame that the keeper caught. Neither team could find a winner so they went into the second OT.

Paige Bulgarelli (York, Pa. / York Suburban) forced the Highlander keeper to make a save three minutes into the final extra period. With a minute and a half to go, Meadow Walshaw-Wertz (Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain) ripped a shot towards the upper right corner, but the keeper managed to stop it.

Gianna Canale (Egg Harbor City, N.J. / Cedar Creek High School) made four saves as she picked up her first career shutout.

Juniata held a 15-7 edge in shots overall and a 4-2 advantage in corners.

The Eagles will host Penn St. Altoona, Wednesday at 7:00.
