HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Juniata women's soccer team got a much needed conference win Tuesday afternoon after defeating Landmark rival Susquehanna University 1-0 at home on Winton Hill Field.
The Eagles improved to 9-5-1 (2-2 Landmark) while Susquehanna fell to 4-8-2 (0-3-2 Landmark) with the loss.
"The rivalry with Susquehanna is alive and well," said Juniata Head Coach Scott McKenzie. "We are happy with the win."
Juniata's game winner came just 5:14 into the match. Junior Rose Lucidi (Bayville, N.Y./Locus Valley) picked up her fifth goal of the season off a through pass from junior Paula Pryor (Westbrookville, N.Y./Burke Catholic) that was deflected by junior Jenna Rodrigue (Manchester, Conn./Manchester).
"Obvioulsy, soccer is a 90 minute match," started McKenzie. "So when you score six minutes in, those are the longest 84 minutes of your life."
The goal was Lucidi's second game winner of the season. She is now second on the team in goals. Pryor and Rodrigue lead the Eagles in the assist category with five and four, respectively.
Juniata outshot the Crusaders 20-6 and earned eight corners to Susquehanna's two.
This match was the Eagles last home match of 2012. Juniata now hits the road for the remainder of its regular season. The Eagles head to Drew on Saturday, Oct. 20 for a 1 p.m. match. Last year Juniata pulled out the 1-0 win against Drew with a goal just before the half.
"Where we are in the Landmark tournament straight from seeding to participation is in our hands," said McKenzie. We have to go do our job, which is to beat Drew. We beat Drew last year and they are going to have that in their heads. It's going to be two teams that need to win going at each other."
