Smashing first half secures shutout win for women’s soccer

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Juniata College women's soccer team shut out Keystone College 6-0, Friday afternoon at the University of Scranton's Fitzpatrick Field to remain undefeated in the 2012 season.

The Eagles got on the board initially from a Paula Pryor (Westbrookville, N.Y./Burke Catholic) unassisted goal in the fourth minute when she punched it by the defending goalkeeper right in front of the net. Seven minutes later Juniata (3-0) put another shot in the back of the Keystone (2-1) net this time scored by Lauren Liacouras (Collegville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) who gained possession from 12 yards out and blasted into the goal.

Pryor struck again in the 13th minute off a feed by Emily Green (Marietta, Pa./Donegal) to put the Eagles up 3-0. Green wasn't satisfied with just assisting a goal, she scored her own mark in the 21st minute when she followed-up on a Sarah Rhodes (Bloomfield, N.Y./Bloomfield Central) shot that bounced off the post.

The last goal of the first half was scored with just 46 seconds left on the clock by Katie Tallman (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) assisted by freshman Grace Braxton (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon Area) to earn her first goal of the 2012 season.

Juniata added its sixth and final goal of the match in the 75th minute with Braxton heading in a goal off a Molly Sellars (Caldwell, N.J./Caldwell) cross in front of Keystone's goal.

"Our team is playing terrific defense and that enables us to take more chances while attacking. We hope to take the positive energy into tomorrow's match," said Head Coach Scott McKenzie.

Juniata outshot the Giants 36 to five and the Eagle goalkeepers were only forced to stop two shots on goal. Freshmen Haley Brigs (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and Victoria Arriola (Hillside, Ill./Saint Joseph) split time in goal with each taking a half.
Juniata continues traveling North to Southern Vermont College for a 3:30 p.m. match on Saturday, September 8.
