Men’s volleyball drops four-set decision at #3 Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – Juniata College men's volleyball closed out play at the 2012 Wisconsin Invitational with a 3-1 loss to third-ranked Carthage College, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at Tarble Arena.

Set scores for the Red Men were 25-18, 25-27, 25-20, 25-22.

Freshman middle Joe Bortak (Jeannette, Pa./Penn Trafford) paced the fourth-ranked Eagles (19-7) with 13 kills on 23 swings with a .522 attack percentage, and recorded four total blocks to finish with 15.0 points.

Senior middle Ben Wolff (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) outdistanced Bortak in points with 15.5, logging 12 kills on 26 swings for a .423 hitting percentage, and combining that with four total blocks and a service ace.

Ross Madden (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) led the pin hitters with nine kills on 27 swings with four attack errors, while Paul Kuhn (York, Pa./Central York) finished with eight terminations.

Juniata hit .243 for the match – shy of Carthage's .301 attack clip versus the Eagles – and peaked with a .450 hitting percentage in the second set.  John Almquist (York, Pa./Central York) guided the Eagle offense at setter, recording 45 assists to go with 11 digs.

Mike Kraft (York, Pa./Eastern York) turned up a team-high 14 digs for the Eagles.

Carthage was led by Randy Hansen's 20 kills on a .486 hitting percentage, with a match-high 18 digs and three total blocks.  Pat Barry put away 18 kills while hitting .200 for the match.

Juniata heads to Springfield College next weekend for the Springfield Invitational, with matches on tap against Wentworth, Kean, and Baruch, in addition to a re-match against the host Pride. The Eagles will stop in Princeton, N.J., on Saturday, March 24, to take on Princeton University.
