Mullen, McCullough, Hoover, Carver, and Eisenberg to be inducted into Juniata Sports Hall of Fame

Mullen, McCullough, Hoover, Carver, and Eisenberg to be inducted into Juniata Sports Hall of Fame

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The 2012 Juniata College Sports Hall of Fame induction class will feature a pair of football greats, an All-American in women’s volleyball, one of Juniata track’s premier distance runners of the early 1970s, and an NCAA wrestling championship participant.

The 2012 Juniata College Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13 in Sill Boardroom in the von Liebig Center for Science on the Juniata campus.

Charles “Moon” Mullen ’57 (football), Jack McCullough ’76 (cross country, track and field), Shad Hoover ’95 (wrestling), Colleen Carver ’00 (women’s volleyball), and Matt Eisenberg ’01 (football, baseball) will be inducted in the Juniata Sports Hall of Fame during ceremonies on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, as part of Homecoming & Family Weekend. The inductees will also be honored during halftime of that day’s Juniata football game against Ursinus College.

Mullen played offensive tackle and linebacker on three undefeated football teams and a one-loss squad between 1953 and 1956 – the so-called “golden era” of Juniata football. He served as a team co-captain for the 1956 squad as a senior, and played all 60 minutes in Juniata’s 1956 Tangerine Bowl appearance at the end of his junior campaign. Mullen earned Associated Press Honorable Mention Little All-America honors in 1956.

McCullough was among Juniata’s more accomplished distance runners of the early and mid-1970s. Over his four years at Juniata, McCullough set the Juniata records in the two-mile and three-mile events, and twice set the course record at the Juniata cross country course. He finished sixth overall in the MAC Cross Country Championships as a senior, and finished among the top 50 in the event in each of his four seasons on the squad. Overall, he won 34 cross-country races including eight during his senior season. McCullough was the recipient of the C. Clifford Brown Alumni Award as the most valuable cross-country runner in 1973, 1975, and 1976.

Hoover was one of the top wrestlers in the history of the Juniata program. He holds the record for most victories in a season with his 26-4 mark as a sophomore, and he also recorded 20-win seasons in his junior (21-3) and freshman (20-4) campaigns. Wrestling at 158 lbs., he qualified for the NCAA championships as a sophomore, becoming just the sixth Juniata wrestler to qualify for nationals. Hoover has the second-highest overall win total in Juniata history, with a mark of 67-11, a feat which he accomplished in just three years before leaving Juniata to complete a 3+2 cooperative program in engineering.

A two-time First team All-America setter for Juniata, Carver finished her career ranked fourth among all-time assist leaders with 4,466. She recorded a school-record 1,887 assists in 1998 on her way to AVCA First Team All-America honors, repeating the accomplishment in 1998 when she tallied 1,730 assists – third among Juniata’s all-time leaders. She also earned Second Team ASICS/Tiger All-America honors in both 1998 and 1999. Carver played on Juniata teams that advanced to the national championship match in both 1996 and 1997. She earned National Strength & Conditioning All-America honors from the NSCA in 2000, and was the team’s most valuable player as a junior.

A four-year letter winner in both football and baseball, Eisenberg graduated as and continues to be Juniata’s all-time career leader in receiving yards (3,500), touchdown reception (38), and all-purpose yardage (5,421). He also ranks second on the Juniata’s all-time leaderboards in career receptions (203, trailing only Hall-of-Famer Mike Cottle ’89 with 213), and scoring (252 points, trailing only Hall of Famer Bill Berrier ’60).

Eisenberg also continues to hold Juniata single game records in scoring, receiving yards, and touchdown receptions, as well as single season marks in receptions, receiving yards, touchdown receptions, all-purpose yards, and all-purpose yards per game. He is the only player in Juniata history to haul in more than 300 yards receiving in a single game – having accomplished the feat twice during the 1999 season, and is one of only two players to score more than 30 points in a single game. Eisenberg earned First Team All-America honors from Don Hansen’s Football Gazette in 1999, and was a Second Team All-American on the Hewlett-Packard squad. He was the 1999 MAC Player of the Year, and was an All-MAC honoree in both 1999 and 1998.

On the baseball field, Eisenberg graduated as the program’s all-time career hits leader with 173 – he still ranks third among career leaders – and was Juniata’s career at bats leader with 500. He currently ranks seventh among all-time runs leaders with 113, and is second in career triples with 14. Eisenberg’s six triples in 1998 tied a school record, eclipsed by David Saintz’s seven triples in 2004. He took First Team All-MAC Commonwealth honors in 1999 as a sophomore, and 2001 as a senior.

Eisenberg was the 2001 recipient of the Stanford Mickle Award as the top male athlete in the senior class.
