MIDDLETOWN, CT- Juniata's women's volleyball team faced the Wesleyan University Cardinals in Connecticut Friday evening and came away with another 3-0 victory.
Juniata started the match like many of their other 3-0 sweeps in October, on the front foot early. The Eagles won five consecutive points after the Cardinals took the opener. The Eagles led 7-3 after the first ten. In the middle of set one Wesleyan began to come back, winning eight out of ten points at one point in the set. They had come within three points of the Eagles twice at 18-15 and 19-16, and then cut the lead to two points at 22-20. The Eagles did well to maintain their lead in the final points, and came away with the 25-21 set win.
The Eagles held an identical lead to set one after the first ten points in set two, 7-3. This time the Cardinals stayed within striking distance, coming their closest at 12-10. At that point, the Eagles would go on an assertive 13-3 run to close out the set 25-13. The final point came off of a service ace by Mia Schubert.
Set three seemed to be the most tightly contested set of the match at its start. The Cardinals held leads at 3-4, 4-6, and at 5-7, and looked like they might be able to contest Juniata for a set. The 5-7 lead would be the last time they led though. The Eagles won the next four points to regain the lead, never to give it up again. The teams were trading points down the line in set three until the Eagles went on a 7-1 burst to finish the match strong. They would end up winning the set 25-18 with the final point coming from a clutch kill by Olivia Foley.
Kennedy Christy led the Eagles in kills on the day, while Foley led with 34 assists and Sydney Ohl added 11 digs. The Eagles also totaled 13 service aces as a team, with multiple players contributing multiple aces in the stats line.
Now 21-0, the Eagles will stay in Connecticut as they look to close out a perfect October with a doubleheader in the Wesleyan Invitational tomorrow. They will face Ithaca College at 11:30 a.m. and Colby College at 2:00 p.m.
