HUNTINGDON, Pa.- In their annual Dig Pink match on Friday night, Juniata's women's volleyball team swept Elizabethtown 3-0.
The stands were packed and a sea of pink supported the Eagles all night, helping them win 25-13, 25-13, and 25-10 in sets one, two, and three, respectively.
The beginning of set one gave a false impression of how the match would unfold. The Blue Jays contested Juniata on every point at the start and held five different one point leads before the game knotted at eight points each. After a 9-1 run Elizabethtown found themselves in a deep hole down 17-9. The Eagles would only give up four more points in the rest of the set, winning it 25-13 with the final point coming from an Elizabethtown attack error.
The Blue Jays established a larger and more commanding lead in the beginning of set two, jumping out to a 3-8 start. As they did in set one, however, the Eagles went on a huge 14-1 run in the next 15 points to take another insurmountable lead at 17-9. Again, Juniata only conceded four more points in the rest of the set, winning it by the same score, 25-13. This time the final point came from a kill by Lily Podolan.
Set three went much more smoothly for the Eagles. They never trailed in the set, and thus they never had to come from behind like they did in sets one and two. They jumped out to a 12-2 run and sustained the pressure on the Blue Jays for the entire set. Courtney Williams had eight kills in the third set, and fittingly spiked home the winning point of the night for the Eagles.
Williams performance in set three gave her the edge to lead in kills with 15, a career-high, while Audrey Muth also added 10 of her own. Olivia Foley totaled 44 assists on the night and Kennedy Christy made a match-high 11 digs.
The Eagles are now 3-0 in the Landmark Conference and 15-0 overall. They will look to continue their strong play when they host a doubleheader tomorrow against conference opponent Susquehanna University at 12:00 p.m. and later against Washington and Lee at 5:00 p.m.
