PITTSBURGH, Pa.- The Juniata's women's volleyball team faced the Carnegie Mellon University Tartans on Wednesday night and came away with the 3-0 sweep to move to 11-0 on the season. The result marks their 73rd consecutive win, creeping ever so slightly toward the second highest all-time win streak in women's collegiate volleyball accomplished by Concordia St. Paul's (Division II) 75 straight wins from 2008-2010. The all-time record was achieved by neighboring Penn State from 2007-2010 with 109 consecutive wins.
The match against the Tartans started well for the Eagles, and it only got better as the match went on.
The Eagles reached a 7-4 lead in set one, and went on two separate four-point runs in the middle of set one to separate themselves from the Tartans. At 20-12 the Tartans went on a four-point run of their own to make it 20-16, but it was too little too late. The Eagles would win the set 25-20.
After that 7-4 lead in set one, the Eagles improved their first 11 points in set two, leading 8-3. They improved again to a five-point run, winning points from 11-6 to 15-6. The nine-point lead was insurmountable for the Tartans, and the Eagles would go on to win the set by five more points than set one, 25-15.
Set three fell somewhere in-between sets one and two, but the most important thing remained consistent for the Eagles. A win. After jumping out to a 7-4 lead again, the Eagles seemed to be cruising. Carnegie Mellon responded this time though. They had brought it to within two points at 13-11, and at 14-12. This was no unfamiliar situation for the Eagles though. At 14-12 the Eagles won seven of the next 10 points to give them an six point cushion. From there, the teams traded points and the Eagles' lead finished at seven, with a set three score of 25-18.
In a well-rounded performance from the Eagles, Audrey Muth led with 10 kills, Olivia Foley added 25 assists, and Kiona Sky Rousset-Hernandez totaled 20 digs.
The win moves the Eagles to 11-0, and they will get some time off until they open conference play at Goucher University next Friday, October 4, at 6:00 p.m.
