Eagles Sweep Diplomats on Senior Night

2019 Seniors

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata women's volleyball team picked up their 10th win in the month of October with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-21) win over Franklin and Marshall, Friday evening at Memorial Gymnasium to kick off the Wid Guisler Invitational.

The opening set was back and forth as the Eagles kept building up small leads, but the Diplomats would close the gap quickly. With the score at 10-10, a kill from Morgan Edwards (Lancaster, Pa. / Penn Manor) followed by two from Dejia Danhi (Ashburn, Va. / Stone Bridge) and a block from Danhi and Victoria Taylor (Middletown, Del. / Delaware Military Academy) made it 14-10. Following an F&M timeout, Taylor added a kill but Franklin & Marshall came right back to make it 16-15. The teams traded runs again, as the Eagles opened up another five-point lead, 20-15, but the F&M tallied four straight to get within one, 20-19. Juniata called timeout, and closed the set with a kill from Emma Davis (East Berlin, Pa / Dover Area HS), a Diplomat attack error, two kills from Marie Gonsar (New Castle, Pa. / Shenango H.S.) and an ace from Sophia Gingrich (Minneapolis, Minn. / Minneapolis Southwest H.S.) ended the set, 25-21.

Set two saw Juniata jump out to a 7-1 lead, but the Diplomats slowly parsed the lead as they got within three, 12-9. A kill and an ace from Gonsar, followed by a Davis kill with one more Gonsar ace made it 16-9 as the visitors called timeout. Taylor tallied two more kills to make it 18-9, and the Eagles cruised the rest of the way to win on a Davis kill, 25-18.

The third set the Eagles led by as seven, 11-4, but the Diplomats fought their way back, with back to back aces making it 16-14. Kills from Edwards and Danhi combined with two errors from F&M put the Eagles back up by seven. The Diplomates got within three, 23-20, but Taylor's 11th kill gave Juniata match point, and following an Eagle attack error they won on a F&M service error.

Juniata will take on Arcadia tomorrow at 1:00 and Randolph Macon at 6:00
