Eagles Soar Past SUNY Canton

Abigail Luensmann tallied 22 assists, seven digs, four kills, four aces, and a block assist in the win over SUNY Canton.

CENTER VALLEY, Pa.- The Juniata women's volleyball team got kills from 11 different players as they wrapped up the weekend with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 26-24) sweep of SUNY Canton, Saturday at Billera Hall. 

The Eagles jumped all over the Roos to open the match one as they opened with a 17-3 run and never looked back. They easily took set one 25-12 on an ace by Sophia Gingrich (Minneapolis, Minn. / Minneapolis Southwest H.S.).  

In the second set, with the score at 8-7, the Eagles when on an 11-0 run to take control of the second set. Marie Gonsar (New Castle, Pa. / Shenango H.S.) tallied a kill, the Roos committed an error, Makenna Hallager (Glenolden, Pa. / Merion Mercy Academy) tallied an ace, Dejia Danhi (Ashburn, Va. / Stone Bridge) and Abigail Luensmann (Altoona, Pa. / Bellwood-Antis H.S.) combined for a block, Danhi added a kill and Hallager contributed another ace before SUNY Canton called timeout. The Roos committed an error coming out the timeout, Hallager tallied two more aces while Danhi added two more kills to complete the run as JC led 19-7. A block from Danhi and Brianne Carmody (Midlothian, Va. / James River) gave JC set point before Lauren Levi (Oregon City, Ore. / Oregon City HS) ended it with a kill.  

Juniata trailed by as many as five in the third set as the Roos looked to extend the match. SUNY Canton reached set point at 24-23 via kill, but that was their final point of the match. Back to back kills from Emma Davis (East Berlin, Pa / Dover Area HS) gave JC match point and a SUNY Canton error ended the match. 

The Eagles will return to action next Friday at Wesleyan at 7:00 PM.
