Blue Jays Befuddle Eagles

Abigail Luensmann

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata women's volleyball team fell to #23 Johns Hopkins, 3-1 (17-25, 35-33, 14-25, 12-25), Wednesday evening at Memorial Gymnasium on day one of the Juniata Invitational.

The opening set was tight midway through at 14-17, but from that point, the Blue Jays closed the set on 8-3 run to grab set one, 25-17.

The second set was the wildest of the match as both teams had to stave off set point several times as the set ended midway into the thirties. Trailing by one, 32-33, a kill from Morgan Edwards (Lancaster, Pa. / Penn Manor) pulled the Eagles even and a big kill from Marie Gonsar (New Castle, Pa. / Shenango H.S.) pushed Juniata gain to set point. Emma Davis (East Berlin, Pa / Dover Area HS) ended set two with a kill of her own, 35-33.

The Blue Jays opened the third set by taking seven of the first eight points to again go up early. A Victoria Taylor (Middletown, Del. / Delaware Military Academy) kill pulled the Eagles within four, 12-16, but the Eagles couldn't get any closer as Johns Hopkins closed the set on a 9-2 surge.

The fourth set saw the visitors jump ahead 4-10 run and they never looked back as they cruised in set four to take the match with a 12-25 win in set four.

The Blue Jays hit .319 for the match while Juniata was at .121.

Tomorrow, Juniata will play St. Vincent at 12:00 and Messiah at 6:00.
