Woods Breaks School Record at Crusader Outdoor Classic

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Both the Juniata College men and women's outdoor track and field teams traveled to Susquehanna University for the Crusader Outdoor Classic Saturday and had great individual performances.  Junior Katrina Woods (Shirleysburg, Pa./Mount Union) broke the school record in the 5K by a second, winning the event in 17:55.55, the fastest time in the Landmark Conference this year.  She won the event nearly a minute ahead of the second place finisher.  Her time also qualified her for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships.  Woods set the record last year at Susquehanna.

 

Men's Track and Field
Senior Justin Clapper (Buffalo Mills, Pa./Bedford) continued his dominance in the field.  He won the discus throw with a mark of 43.30m and was third in the hammer throw with a distance of 44.56m. Also performing well was junior Justin Herr (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) who finished second in the men's triple jump with a distance of 12.71m.

 

On the track, junior Nate Alter (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) ran a personal best 15:41.90 in the 5K to finish third.  And the men's 4x400m relay team of senior Ryan Trexler (Altoona, Pa./Altoona), junior Connor Robinson (Asheville, N.C./Asheville), sophomore Trevor Stephens (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and freshman Michael Roth (Frederick, Md./Urbana) came across in 3:33.67 to place second in the event.

 

Women's Track and Field
Along with Woods, senior Caroline Morgan (Havefrtown, Pa./Haverford) took first place on the track and qualified for ECAC's.  She won the 10K with a time of 39:06.27.  Sophomore Courtney Peterson (York, Pa./York Central) ran a personal best time of 41.59.78 in the same event and came in third.

 

Senior Melissa King (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) was the Eagles other big winner on the day, coming in first in the hammer throw with a mark of 36.44m.

 

Senior Angela Shaffer (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock) had a good all-around day.  She tied for first in the women's high jump after clearing 1.62m, tying a personal best.  Shaffer went on to place second in the 100m hurdles after finishing in a season-best 15.88 seconds and qualified for ECAC's in both events.  She also placed third in the 400m hurdles with a season-best time of 1:12.16.

 

Juniata travels to Frostburg State next.  They will compete in the Frostburg Invitational on Saturday, April 6.
