KANSAS CITY, Kan. – For just the second time in program history, the Juniata College women's soccer team has received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Ethics & Sportsmanship Award, the organization announced this afternoon. The award is presented in the Gold, Silver or Bronze versions, which recognize teams that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game, as reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season.
"It's nice when you are able to play at a high level, get some good wins, play the game the right way and win," said head coach Scott McKenzie. "If you can play technically correct, tactically correct, and within the sportsmanship, what more can you ask for?"
The Gold version is awarded to team that accumulated no cards of any kind, the silver to teams with no red cards and a maximum of five yellow cards, and the bronze to teams with no red cards and a maximum of 10 yellow cards in the season. Juniata is receiving the silver distinction. The Eagles also received the Silver distinction for the 2004 season.
"It's a testament to our seniors," said McKenzie. "It's one more piece they can stamp on the program. They are the ones who taught the younger players how to play."
