Sherman's Career-High Sparks Eagles Past Gophers on Senior Day

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata women's basketball team picked up a huge 90-87 win over Goucher on senior day, Saturday afternoon inside Memorial Gymnasium. 

Haily Sherman scored a career-high 38 points while going 16-20 from the floor, with seven rebounds, two assists, four steals and two blocks. Emily McCann added 15 points, five rebounds, and four steals off the bench. Laney Gerdich totaled a double-double with 12 points, 14 rebounds, and three assists. Deja Gillo contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists, while Bri Bodtorf compiled eight points, four rebounds, and eight assists. 

Sherman was scoring right out the gate as she scored 11 of the first 15 Eagle points in a fast and furious opening to the game. Aleya Eisenberg and Dani Scipioni scored a bucket each for the other four points in the early part. Two Sherman layups in the final 48 seconds gave JC a narrow 23-22 lead heading into the second. 

The second quarter was another high-scoring, tightly contested affair, with Sherman anchoring the Eagle offense again. JC was down seven, 39-32, with three and a half minutes to go in the half. They closed on a 13-3 run, as a Gillo three off an Olivia Berg assist and two Sherman foul shots capped the run. 

Juniata led 45-42 at the half. 

Goucher controlled the third quarter, 22-14, as Juniata trailed by five heading into the final quarter. 

The fourth quarter saw McCann tally five straight points late to help give Juniata the lead back inside the final two minutes. Goucher answered with a three, and Sherman countered with a Bankshot from the right side. The Gophers missed two foul shots and had to foul. Gerdich converted both of hers for the Eagles, and Juniata iced the game. Gerdich was huge in the final quarter for the Eagles, putting up 10 points, 10 rebounds, and two assists, while McCann added 10 points as well. 

The game featured six ties and 19 lead changes, with the Eagles winning the battle on the glass, 52-37.

Juniata will travel to take on Susquehanna on Wednesday at 7:00.
