Rangers Pull Away from Eagles in Second Half

Madison Colyer

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata women's basketball team fell to the visiting Drew Rangers, 80-59, Sunday afternoon inside Memorial Gymnasium.

The Rangers struck first with a layup; Cassie Mock (Martinsburg, Pa. / Central Martinsburg) got fouled at the other end while shooting and went to the line. She made the first, missed the second but got the rebound. The Eagles ran their offense, with Averie Hess (Jersey Shore, Pa. / Jersey Shore) finding Madison Colyer (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) who made a difficult shot from the left side of the floor to make it 3-2 early. The teams went back and forth, with Mock finding Colyer for another two. On the next offensive possession, Mock lobbed it inside to Gracie Stauffer (Loysville, Pa. / West Perry) who had sealed her defender, and she scored easily to make it 7-6. Jamie Mahigel's (Lewistown, Pa. / Mifflin County) three from the right corner off a pass from Kynnedy Miller (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon Area HS) made it 12-9 Eagles with a little under four minutes to go. The Rangers turned up the pressure as they closed the first quarter on an 11-2 run as they led 23-14 after one.

The teams traded misses to open the second over the first two and half minutes before Mock found Hess in the right corner for a jumper. Back to back, Colyer jumpers made it 26-20, but the Rangers kept the Eagles at bay, leading by as many as 12 in the final minutes of the half. Juniata got a stop in the final 20 seconds with Stauffer poking the ball free. She started running down the floor; Grace Long (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin) scooped up the ball and tossed it ahead. Stauffer gathered it and laid in with her left hand to make it 35-25 as JC trailed by 10 at the half.

Long hit a three in the first 54 seconds of the third to bring Juniata within seven, but the Eagles couldn't get closer the rest of the way as Drew pulled away throughout the third, pushing their lead to 19 by the end of the quarter.  The visitors cruised through the fourth to leave Huntingdon with the victory.

Colyer posted the second double-double of her career with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Mock broke double-digit assists for the second time this season.

Juniata will take on Scranton, Friday at 7:00.
