No. 7 Juniata Upset by Thiel 3-1 in Final Home Match

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – No. 7 Juniata College men's volleyball dropped a tough match 3-1 (17-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-21) to Thiel College Wednesday night in its final home match of the 2013 season.  Juniata is now 18-10, while Thiel improved to 16-8 with the win.

The programs also went to four the last time they met, and the Eagles came away with the 3-1 win back on January 9.  The series this season is now tied at 1-1.

Juniata's attack was led by sophomores Paul Kuhn (York, Pa./Central York) and Joe Bortak (Jeannette, Pa./Penn Trafford) and junior Alex McColgin (Buffalo, N.Y./Hamburg).   Kuhn and McColgin tied for a team-high 14 kills, while Bortak finished with 12 of his own, respectively.

Freshman Matt Elias (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) facilitated the offense most the match before senior Rob Strauss (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) took over.  The pair combined for 47 assists on the night.

Juniata won game one, but then struggled as the Tomcats offense heated up, hitting .407 and .529 on the way to winning the second and third games, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.  The Eagles then battled tough in game four, but could not regain the lead late and dropped only their second Continental Volleyball Conference match of the season.

Juniata will get a chance at revenge when it travels to Thiel for its next match.  They face the Tomcats in Greenville, Pa. on Wednesday, April 3 at 7pm.  The Eagles are 4-1 all-time against Thiel.
