Eagles earn three wins at Elmira College tournament

Elmira, NY. – Juniata men's volleyball picked up three wins in their first matches back on the East Coast at the Elmira College Tournament. The Eagles faced Hilbert College, SUNY New Paltz and Elmira College, sweeping each squad 3-0.

The Eagles opened tournament play against Hilbert College and defeated the Hawks, 3-0.  Set scores were 25-18, 25-17, and 25-13.

Juniata started with a new group of players on the court, and freshman Mark Feiler (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) lead the talented newcomers with six kills and a .333 attack percentage. Feiler and fellow freshman Kyle Rodgers (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) held down the net, each having a hand in three of Juniata's nine team blocks with Rodgers also accumulating two solo blocks.

In the second match of the day, Juniata faced the Hawks of SUNY New Paltz and soared to a 3-0 victory. Set scores were 25-16, 25-23, and 25-21.

The Eagles were led by pin hitters Paul Kuhn (York, Pa./Central York) and Paul Ejups (Bay Shore, N.Y./West Islip) who turned in 10 kills apiece.  Kuhn only recorded one error on his 14 swings, finishing with a .643 attack percentage. Freshman middle Joe Bortak (Jeannette, Pa./Penn Trafford) added seven kills in the Eagles' triumph and Ben Wolff (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) chipped in with three kills.

Elmira College hosted the Juniata in the final match of the day and Juniata walked away with its third win. Set scores were 25-20, 25-20, and 25-22. Final statistics were not available; more details will be posted later on juniatasports.net

Juniata returns to the court on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Nazareth College Tournament. The Eagles open play against D'Youville College at 2:00 pm.
