BETHLEHEM, Pa.- The Juniata field hockey team lost in heartbreaking fashion, falling 2-1 in overtime at Moravian University Saturday evening in the Landmark Conference quarterfinals.
Mallory Prince scored for the Eagles in regulation, with Tess Ledeboer providing the assist. Amanda Puza made five saves in goal.
Moravian took the only shot of the first quarter less than three minutes in, and Puza denied it. The second quarter saw the offenses start to click, as Moravian outshot the Eagles 3-2, and Puza was called upon to make two more saves.
Two minutes into the third, Ledeboer dribbled down to the end line and sent the ball across the middle. It rolled to Prince inside the circle, who fired the ball into the left corner to make it 1-0.
Eight minutes later, the Greyhounds found an answer on a breakaway, rocketing a low shot into the Eagle cage from the top of the circle.
The teams were even the rest of the way, so the game went into overtime.
Juniata had their chances across the two overtime periods, taking eight corners to the Greyhounds two and outshooting Moravian 4-1, but they couldn't find a winner, so the game was decided via shootout.
The teams traded misses the first time through. Lillian Case dribbled down before taking a touch to the right and beating the keeper.
The goalies regained control of the shootout, denying the next three shooters. The Greyhounds made their next one to go up 2-1 and put pressure on the Eagles. Kaylyn Walters calmly dribbled straight down the middle, as the keeper kept retreating, so she kept getting closer to the cage before blasting a shot past the Greyhound goalie into the cage.
The next Moravian shooter managed to get past Puza and score to win the shootout in favor of Moravian.
Juniata finishes the year 5-12, with this being the team's sixth overtime game they played this season.
