Field Hockey Wins 2OT Shootout Thriller at Drew for First Landmark Conference Win of the Season

MADISON, N.J.- The Juniata field hockey team won at Drew University, 2-1 in penalty strokes, Saturday afternoon to move to 1-1 in Landmark Conference play.

Tess Ledeboer scored the goal in regulation for the Eagles, while Kaylyn Walters had an assist. Amanda Puza made five saves in the cage for Juniata.

Juniata controlled the first quarter, outshooting the Rangers 6-0 with three penalty corners, but they couldn't find a goal.

Eleven minutes into the second quarter, Walters got the corner at the top of the circle and played it towards Ledeboer at the back post. Ledeboar tapped it past the Ranger keeper to make it 1-0.

Midway through the third, the Rangers found an answer and tied the game at 1-1.

Neither team scored, so the game went into overtime.

Juniata outshot Drew 10-3 across the two overtime periods, but neither team could find a second goal, so the game was decided by a shoutout.

Ledeboer, Lillian Case, and Sydney Witter started by converting their penalties, while Puza forced the Rangers to go 1-3. The teams combined to go 1-6 over the next six penalty takers, so a Ranger player stepped forward for the seventh penalty, needing to make it to continue the shootout. The Ranger player dribbled right and Puza cutoff the angle, forcing the shot wide to seal the victory.

This was the first win for the Eagles over Drew since 2021.

Juniata returns to action this Wednesday at 7:00, hosting Lebanon Valley.
