Juniata field hockey survives Alvernia for 2-1 road victory

READING, Pa. – Juniata College field hockey grabbed a lead early in the second half and hung on for a 2-1 victory over Alvernia University, Tuesday afternoon at Schlager Memorial Field.

Juniata (9-2) senior Meghan McGlone (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) broke the 1-1 tie just over eight minutes into the second half, burying a rebound of a ball kicked away by Alvernia goalie Erin Wunsch.

McGlone's goal completed a come-from-behind win for the 20th-ranked Eagles.

Alvernia (9-4) struck first in the contest, when Sam Landis scored on a penalty corner in the 20th minute, off a feed from Erin Solley.

That lead lasted through most of the first half, until Juniata junior Caroline Phillips (Wilmington, Del./Concord) knotted the game at 1-1 with 2:23 showing on the clock.  Phillips finished on a penalty corner play, off a pass from Emma Dahmus (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin).

Juniata goalie Janelle Howard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) was kept busy over her 70 minutes in the Eagle cage, as the Eagles were outshot 15-9 in the contest. Howard recorded eight saves – second-most in a game this season – while McGlone also recorded a defensive save for Juniata.

Wunsch tallied four saves in the Alvernia goal, with the Crusaders' Mary Van Kirk credited with a defensive save.

Juniata returns home this Saturday, Oct. 15, as the Eagles host Catholic University of America in a Landmark Conference matchup starting at 1:00 p.m. The Eagles' graduating seniors will be recognized in pre-match ceremonies.
