Swimming Opens Competition at Vulcan Invite

CALIFORNIA, Pa.- The Juniata women's and men's swim team's competed in the first day of the Vulcan Invitational hosted by California University of PA.

The Eagles opened up the meet with a fifth place finish in the 200yd free relay against Division II Cal U and Lock Haven. The quartet of Meghan Brubaker (Lancaster, Pa. / Lampeter-Strasburg), Emma Sprowls (Coal Center, Pa. / California Area HS), Gianna Canale (Egg Harbor City, N.J. / Cedar Creek High School), and Priscilla Diamond (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg Area HS) clocked in at 1:53.64. In the 400 IM, Kendra White (Jersey Shore, Pa. / Jersey Shore Area Senior H.S.) finished third with a time of 5:07.13 while Tabi Dettelback (Martinsville, N.J. / Bridgewater Raritan) finished with a time of 5:10.38. 

In the 500yd free, Canale finished sixth coming in with a time of 6:10.85 and Emma Pinto (Washington, N.J. / Warren Hills Regional HS) finished eighth with a time of 6:50.34. In the 100 breaststroke, Cassie Sanidad (Silver Spring, Md. / Springbrook) took second touching the wall at 1:12.69 while Sprowls finished sixth with a time of 1:19.28. In the 200 back, Dettelback finished fourth with a time of 2:23.21 and Carolann Edwards (Martinsville, N.J. / Bridgewater Raritan) finished sixth with a time of 2:36.69. 

In the 100yd free, Sprowls (1:03.07), Diamond (1:03.20), Brubaker (1:03.35), and Pinto (1:11.95) finished fifth, sixth, seventh, and tenth, respectively. Sanidad claimed second in the 200yd butterlfy clocking in at 2:22.64. JC closed out the evening with a fourth place finish in the 400yd medley relay. The team of Dettelback, Sanidad, White, and Diamond finished with a time of 4:34.58. 

On the men's side, Hunter Mona (State College, Pa. / State College Area) touched the wall at 4:27.19 in the 400 IM. Frederick Ginder (Victor, N.Y. / Victor Senior High School) clocked in at 50.09 in the 100 free. In the 200yd butterfly, Evan Walker (Versailles, Pa. / East Allegheny) finished with a time of 2:22.40. 

At the end of the first day, the scores are the following: 

Lock Haven 84. Juniata Women 56. 

Cal U 112. Juniata Women 32.

The Eagles will continue to compete in the Vulcan Invitational tomorrow at 10 am.
