Lone Goal Puts Greyhounds Past Eagles

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Juniata women's soccer team fell 1-0 to the Moravian Greyhounds Saturday evening.

Juniata controlled the match's opening minutes, and the first shot of the game from Alyssa Bui in the seventh minute went wide. Moravian swiftly changed the momentum with a wide shot in the ninth minute and the match's lone goal in the 15th minute. A Moravian cross met a Greyhound player on the edge of the 18-yard box to start the play. The ball was then headed past the Juniata defense on the ground to a teammate that fired it over the keeper from six yards out.

Each team managed a shot apiece over the rest of the first half, with Mariah McDonald putting Juniata's first shot on goal in the 42nd minute and Moravian forcing Avery Zales' first save of the match in the 43rd minute.

Moravian persisted in pressure in the opening minutes of the second half. Zales was tasked with making saves in the 52nd and 53rd minutes. Juniata responded with a corner kick that led to a header from Gillian Dell that hit the post and a loose ball that was picked up by the Moravian keeper.

A corner in the 63rd minute saw Dell rise above defenders to put a headed shot on target with lots of pace that was saved by the Moravian keeper. Juniata earned another corner, but the Eagles lost possession and were met with a counterattack that led to a shot on Zales that forced her to dive right for a save. Moravian tallied two more corners in the next few minutes, but they were unable to add to their lead.

Juniata drew a pair of fouls within the last ten minutes, but they were unable to execute from set pieces, as Alyssa Bui put a free kick over the goal in the 82nd minute and at the keeper for a save in the 84th minute.

Clear chances were difficult to come by as each team tallied seven shots. Dell and Bui each fired three shots across the ninety with one shot on goal apiece. McDonald also put a shot on target.

Zales ended the match with four saves from the five shots on goal.

The Eagles return to play Wednesday, September 28, to play Penn College at Gibbel Stadium. Juniata holds a 4-0 record against the Wildcats, and they won 2-1 in Williamsport in the 2021 matchup.
