Eagles Hang Close in Two Losses At York

Eagles Hang Close in Two Losses At York

YORK, Pa.- The Juniata softball team put up a good fight against tough opposition on Sunday afternoon, but ultimately came away with two losses after traveling to take on York College of Pennsylvania in a doubleheader. They would fall 11-6 in game one before suffering a 4-1 defeat in game two.

Game one saw both teams put up steady offensive production, with the Eagles simply unable to keep pace with York. Juniata did manage to take a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning on the back of four runs on four hits in that frame, but York would equalize in the bottom half of the inning before going on to reclaim and extend the lead through the later innings. Down 11-4 in the top of the seventh, Juniata did mount a small comeback, scoring twice in the inning on a hit and two walks, but ultimately stalled out. Sophomore Alison Superka (Orefield, Pa. / Parkland) put up another strong hitting performance, going 2 for 2 at the plate with a double to kick off the Eagles' fourth inning onslaught, along with drawing two walks to reach base in all four of her plate appearances.

The offensive production was more modest for both teams in game two, with 11 combined hits between the two teams as compared to the 23 produced in game one. Superka was the only Juniata hitter to reach base twice, going 1 for 2 along with working another walk. Ruthie Betts (Hawk Run, Pa. / West Branch Area) picked up the sole RBI of the game for Eagles, hitting a single to left field to score Kassandra Roush (Indiana, Pa. / Marion Center Area) in the top of the third inning. This narrowed the game score to 4-1, but both teams were kept off the board for the final four innings of the game. Cate Baran (Tyrone, Pa. / Tyrone) also found a positive in the losses, stealing her 19th base of the season, breaking the Juniata record for stolen bases in a season.

The team falls to 9-21 on the season, remaining 1-7 in the Landmark Conference. The remainder of the schedule has them traveling to Landmark opponents, with a doubleheader at Elizabethtown on Wednesday, April 27th, before they head to Scranton on Saturday the 30th to close out the regular season.
