Softball Wraps Up Play at The Spring Games

LEESBURG, Fla.- The Juniata softball team wrapped up their week at The Spring Games with a 9-2 loss against Skidmore and a 4-3 loss against St. Scholastica.

Skidmore took the lead first in game one as they scored a run in the second inning. Juniata tied up the game in the fourth to make the score, 1-1. Maggie Peck (Philipsburg, Pa. / Philipsburg Osceola) doubled to left center and then Anna Baran (Tyrone, Pa. / Tyrone) singled to right field advancing Peck across home plate. The Throughbreds scored four more runs in the sixth to re-take the lead, 5-1 and then added on four more runs in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, JC scored again but it wasn't enough to take the lead against Skidmore. In the bottom of the seventh, Erica Lybarger (Beaverdale, Pa. / Forest Hills Jr.-Sr. H.S.) was walked and then advanced to second. Lybarger then advanced to third on a passed ball and scored after reaching an error by the first basewoman. 

Game two was more competitive for the Eagles as they took a 2-0 lead against St. Scholastica before the Saints added a run in the bottom of the fourth. In the top of the first, Peck singled down the left field line and then stole second. Maya McLeod (San Diego, Calif. / La Jolla Country Day School) singled down the right field line to advance Peck to third base. McLeod and Peck both advanced on a wild pitch. In the fourth, McLeod reached first on an error by the second basewoman and advanced to second on a wild pitch. McLeod advanced to third on a walk and then scored on a sacrifice fly to left field. After four innings, the Eagles led the Saints, 2-1.

St. Scholastica scored again in the fifth to tie up the game at 2-2. The next two innings were scoreless, forcing the teams in to extra innings. Peck was placed on second to start the inning. On a ground out to second, Peck advanced to third. Baran singled up the middle to bring Peck home. The Eagles led, 3-4 going in to the bottom of the eighth. St. Scholastica scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to win, 4-3. 

Erin Pfeffer (Camp Hill, Pa. / Trinity High School) pitched all eight innings and struck out 13 of the 29 batters she faced.
