Eagles Conquer Cougars

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The #3 Juniata men's volleyball team defeated Kean, 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 32-30) Friday evening inside Memorial Gymnasium.

The Eagles started the match humming offensively as they hit .417 with 13 kills. Juniata surged ahead 9-4 early and never looked back as they kept the Cougars at bay the rest of the set, taking set one on a Will Phelan kill, 25-18.

The second set saw Juniata hit for a better percentage as they hit .419 and more kills with 16. The Cougars clawed their way back within three late in the match at 22-19, but Juniata slammed the door closed, taking the final three points on a service error, a kill from Tyler Goldsborough, and a solo block by Kevin Duffy III

Kean had no intentions of being swept as they blitzed the Eagles early to lead 5-12, and the Juniata found themselves on the back foot early in the set. JC chipped away at the deficit, and at 12-16, kills from Phelan and Duffy, along with two Kean errors, tied it at 16. The visitors managed to retake the lead, and a late three-point flurry saw them reach set point, 21-24. A Maxwell Barr kill, an ace from Campbell Gerdeman, a block by Duffy and Phelan, and finally, a Duffy kill gave the Eagles match point at 25-24. Kean managed to fend off six Eagle match points before Barr gave Juniata another opportunity at match point, and a Kean attack error ended the match, 32-30.

Duffy totaled ten kills while hitting .412 with two solo blocks and five block assists. Goldsborough tallied 11 kills while hitting .350 with an assist, four digs, and a block assist. Barr added seven kills while hitting .357, a dig, and three block assists. Luke Hoffman chipped in with six kills (.400), an ace, and two block assists.

The Eagles are 24-2, 6-1 in the conference.

Juniata will host Rutgers Newark in more Continental Volleyball Conference action tomorrow at 2:00 on Alumni Day. The Scarlet Raiders come to Huntingdon #15 in the country, are 4-1 in the conference, and are led by Andrew Zaleck, who has won Continental Volleyball Conference Player of the Week four straight times.
