#7 Stevens Narrowly Edge Eagles in Five.

Joe Fick

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata men's volleyball team couldn't quite pull out the win as they fell in five to #7 Stevens Institute of Technology, 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 23-25, 25-20, 13-15) Saturday morning inside Memorial Gymnasium.

JC trailed 1-5 early, but a kill from Joe Fick (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Township) and two kills from Robert Bowling (Columbus, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) brought them within one at 4-5. After a Stevens kill, Sean Cavanagh (Cranberry Twp., Pa. / Seneca Valley) notched a kill of his own and a block by David Hibner (Burke, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary) and Bowling pulled JC even at 6-6. The teams remained close as every time as one team managed to string a few points together, the other would respond and tie the score again as they tied nine different times. With the score at 20-20, a service error and a kill from Hibner made it 22-20. The Ducks couldn't pull even as a block from Hibner and Bowling wound up ending set one, 25-23.

Set two saw Stevens go up early 5-12, and the Eagles chased the rest of the set. JC managed to narrow the deficit some, but the Ducks reached set point, 20-24. A kill from Fick and two attack errors made it 23-24, which forced Stevens to call timeout, but they took the next point, 23-25,  to tie the match at one set apiece.

The third set followed a similar path as the Ducks built up a sizeable lead, this time 12-19, and again the Eagles couldn't quite come back. A kill from Kevin Duffy (Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle HS), two from Fick and two visitor attack errors made it 17-19. The teams went point for point as the Ducks reached set point, 21-24. A service error and a block by Duffy and Fick brought JC within one, 23-24, but the Ducks got another set winning kill when they needed it as they took set three, 23-25.

Stevens held an 8-10 before a kill from Fick, and a Stevens attack error knotted things at 10-10. The Ducks put down a kill prior to a kill from Duffy, another from Bowling, a Ducks attack error, and a block from Michael Young (Westlake Village, Calif. / Westlake Village) and Duffy put the Eagles up three. Stevens got one back before Fick, Duffy, and Will Phelan (Saegertown, Pa. / Saegertown H.S.) notched a kill apiece along with a Ducks attack error made it 18-12. Stevens called timeout, but JC kept coming with another Duffy kill and a solo block combined with a Fick ace made it 21-12. Juniata wound up taking set four, 25-20.

Set five was opened with JC going up 4-2 following a block by Hibner and Phelan and a Phelan kill. Stevens scored four straight points as they pulled ahead 7-9. The Eagles got within one several times, the last time at 13-14, but again the Ducks managed to hang on and win, 13-15, to win the match.
