Eagles Soar Past Kingsmen

David Hibner
David Hibner had an efficient day against Cal Lutheran as he tallied eight kills (.727) and seven total blocks.

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata men's volleyball team swept visiting Cal Lutheran, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-20) Thursday evening inside Memorial Gymnasium.

The opening set of the match was the tightest, with neither team able to gain much separation, but the Eagles managed to go up by three following a Cal Lutheran attack error late in the set, 21-18. The Kingsmen didn't fold, taking the next two points off back to back kills and JC called timeout. The teams traded points the rest of the way, and with the Eagles at set point, a kill off the block that caromed out of bounds on the left sideline from Robert Bowling (Columbus, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) ended set one, 25-22.

Juniata jumped on the visitors early in set two. Trailing 1-2, a kill from Michael Young (Westlake Village, Calif. / Westlake Village) followed by two Cal Lutheran errors gave JC the lead. The Kingsmen took the next point before a kill from Joe Fick (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Township) and David Hibner (Burke, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary) along with two errors from Cal Lutheran made it 8-3. With the score at 9-5, two Bowling kills bookended another Kingsmen error as the Eagles pushed the lead to seven, and they never looked back. Juniata went on to take set two, 25-19, on a kill from Kevin Duffy (Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle HS).

The third set saw Cal Lutheran lead for the last time at 10-12, before two kills from Hibner, one from Bowling and a solo block from Hibner made it 14-12. The Kingsmen were on the heels of the Eagles through the middle part of the set, pulling within one again at 21-20. Juniata used a Cal Lutheran attack error, a solo block from Hibner, and an ace by Sean Cavanagh (Cranberry Twp., Pa. / Seneca Valley) to reach match point. A block by Hibner and Bowling ended the match in favor of the Eagles, 25-20.

Juniata will host #7 Stevens Institute of Technology, Saturday at 11:00.
