Will Phelan

HARRISONBURG, Va.- The Juniata men's volleyball team moved to 4-1 in conference play with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-20) win over Eastern Mennonite, Saturday afternoon.

The Royals opened the match by taking the first three points before kills from Kevin Duffy (Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle HS) and Drew Hunker (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) along with an EMU attack error evened the match at 3-3. A 5-2 surge from the Eagles, powered by three errors by the hosts and kills from David Hibner (Burke, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary) and Will Hafen (Las Vegas, Nev. / Bishop Gorman)made it 8-5. The Eagles then took complete control of set one with an 8-0 blitz that saw Will Phelan (Saegertown, Pa. / Saegertown H.S.), and Hunker put down two kills apiece. The Eagles cruised to a set one win, 25-9.

Set two was tighter for most of the set, with the Royals pulling even at 13-13. Kills from Phelan and Duffy paired with two EMU attack errors made it 17-13, and the Eagles held the Royals at bay the rest of the set. With the score at 20-6, two straight Hunker kills, and another EMU error made it 23-16, and the Eagles wound up taking set two, 25-20.

Set three followed a similar story to the previous one, with EMU hanging around but never able to quite catch the Eagles as the led fluctuated between four and two points down the stretch. The Royals made it 22-20 before kills from Austin Goodsel (Corry, Pa. / Fort Leboeuf HS), and Phelan gave JC match point prior to Theodore Weinberger (Santa Clara, Calif. / Adrian C. Wilcox HS) ending the match with his lone kill, 25-20.

The Eagles will host Cal Lutheran, Thursday at 6:00.
