Men's Volleyball Takes Final Three Sets at Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.- The Juniata men's volleyball won the final three sets to take down Elizabethtown, 3-1 (17-25, 25-11, 25-18, 25-16) Tuesday evening in Centennial Volleyball Conference action at Thompson Gymnasium. 

The Eagles led early, 4-3 before an 8-2 run from the Blue Jays put the Eagles in a hole they couldn't dig out of as Elizabethtown ran away with set one 17-25.

The Eagles didn't mess around in set two, opening with a 9-2 run. Kevin Duffy (Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle HS) and Sean Cavanagh (Cranberry Twp., Pa. / Seneca Valley) combined for a block, the Blue Jays committed an error and Duffy put down a kill. JC missed on a swing, Elizabethtown couldn't get the serve over the net, Duffy smashed another kill before another Blue Jay error. The Blue Jays got a block before they committed two more errors, and a Robert Bowling (Columbus, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) kill put them ahead. The Eagles cruised to a dominant 25-11 set two win to tie the match at 1-1. 

Set three was tight most of the way as the Blue Jays hung close throughout but couldn't pull even. With the score at 16-15, kills from Duffy and Michael Young (Westlake Village, Calif. / Westlake Village) made it 18-15, and Elizabethtown called timeout. The Eagles closed the set by taking four of the final six points with a Duffy kill pushing Juniata to setpoint before the team's trading service errors to end set three 25-18.  

The Blue Jays went up 2-7 as they tried to force a fifth set, but the Eagles put together another dominant stretch to put the match away. Kills from Joe Fick (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Township) and David Hibner (Burke, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary) to go with an Elizabethtown error and a Cavanagh ace to make it 6-7. The teams went back and forth with a Young solo block, eventually tying things at 9-9. Duffy and Young combined for a block, Fick tallied another kill, and Bowling tacked on a service ace. An error gave Elizabethtown a point back before kills from Fick and Will Hafen (Las Vegas, Nev. / Bishop Gorman), the Blue Jays committed another error and Cavanagh put down another kill to make it 16-10. Juniata maintained at least a four-point lead the rest of the way as the won, 25-16.  

The Eagles will take on Thiel, Friday at 7:00.
