Eagles Evade Sting of Yellow Jackets

David Hibner
David Hibner had eight kills (.467) to go with 11 total blocks (three solos, eight block assists) against Randolph Macon, which is tied for the third-most in a single game in program history.

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata men's volleyball team needed four sets to dispatch Randolph-Macon, 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 18-25, 25-13) to move to 2-0 in CVC Saturday afternoon.

The opening set saw the teams stay tight early as neither could separate, with the Yellow Jackets pulling even at 13-13. Kills from Kevin Duffy (Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle HS) and Robert Bowling (Columbus, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) along with an RMC attack error to go up by three. The Eagles managed two push their lead to five with two more errors by the Yellow Jackets and a kill from Bowling made it 20-15. The Eagles got to set point on a kill from Joe Fick (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Township), 24-19, but RMC took the next two points before a service error ended set one 25-21.

The second set saw Juniata trail till the middle part of the set, and they pulled even three different times before taking their first lead on a Fick kill at 19-18. Bowling added another and David Hibner (Burke, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary) tacked on a solo block to go up 21-18. The Yellow Jackets managed to pull even 21-21 and JC called timeout. The Eagles rattled off four of the next five points with a Bowling kill ending set two, 25-22.

The third set saw Juniata fall behind by five early but kills from Will Phelan (Saegertown, Pa. / Saegertown H.S.), another by Fick, a block by Hibner and Phelan, a Yellow Jacket attack error and a solo Hibner block pulled the Eagles even at 11-11. The teams traded points, but from 12-12 on JC never could quite come back as Randolph Macon pulled away at the end to win 18-25.

The fourth set started close but with the score at 10-10, the Eagles took complete control as they scored nine straight points to go up 19-10 and cruised to a 25-13 win.

The match ended with back to back blocks, first, a block by Hibner and Fick followed by a solo by Hibner to end the match. This was fitting as Hibner finished with 11 total blocks which are tied for the third-most in a single match in program history.

The men's volleyball team will play at Elizabethtown, Tuesday at 8:00.
