Men’s soccer drops senior day match at buzzer

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Juniata College men's soccer's senior day contest against the University of Scranton looked as if it was headed into overtime before the Royals clinched the game winning goal as the final buzzer sounded at Winton Hill Field Tuesday, resulting in an Eagles' 2-1 loss.

In the 33rd minute, freshman Robby Higgins (Middletown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) passed to senior David Grim (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) who found senior Evan LaTourrette (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) on a cross, who finessed the ball into the bottom left corner of the Royal net for Juniata's only goal in the contest.

It wasn't until the 71st minute of play that Scranton (6-8-3, 3-3-1 Landmark) was able to respond, when Royals' junior Bill McGuiness accepted a sophomore Derek Klingman pass for his second goal of the season.

The buzzer beater developed from a Scranton indirect kick opportunity near the sideline. The ball bounced around the six where it met the foot of junior Patrick Daly who put it away for the Royals.

Senior Boddhi Karzen (Makawao, Hawaii/Seabury Hall) played all 90 minutes for Juniata and charted eight saves, as he led a Juniata defense that absorbed 24 Royal shots and protected the net during eight corner kicks.

Tuesday's match marked the conclusion of the Eagles' 2011 season. Juniata finished 5-8-2 overall and 1-6-0 in the Landmark Conference.
