Blue Jays Hold Off Eagles

John Kelly

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.- The Juniata men's basketball team lost on the road at Elizabethtown, 73-67, Wednesday evening.

Elizabethtown opened with a triple and Marcus Hall (York, Pa. / Trinity) scored inside to start the game. The Blue Jays scored the next six points before a Kelly layup off a pass from Cameron Keck (Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro), a Nate DaCanal (Johnsonburg, Pa. / Elk County Catholic) jumper and two free throws from Keck pulled the Eagles even. Jake Holsopple's (Duncansville, Pa. / Hollidaysburg) jumper pushed Juniata ahead momentarily before a four-point Blue Jay flurry gave them the lead back. Nick Rigby's (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon H.S.) mid-range jumper off an assist from Kohl Bernarding (Cochranton, Pa. / Cochranton H.S.) knotted things at 12.

Elizabethtown went on a 9-0 run over the next two minutes before another Hall layup followed by a Keck three off a kickout pass from Kelly and another Keck three following an offensive rebound brought Juniata within one. Etown countered with a 6-0 surge and the Eagles couldn't closer than five the rest of the half.

DaCanal's triple at the buzzer made it 38-31 as the Eagles headed into the locker room.

Juniata opened the second half on a 7-2 run as Keck drilled a three, the Blue Jays made two free throws, Kelly scored inside off a Nathan Markey (York, Pa. / Central York) assist and a hall layup after a Markey steal made it 40-38 with 16 minutes to go in the game.

The Blue Jays pushed ahead and eventually got their back to six, DaCanal cut it back down to four with a pair of free throws momentarily before Etown increased their lead to 11 with seven minutes to go in the game.

A DaCanal three made it 61-55 with a little under four minutes to go, but the Eagles couldn't close the gap anymore until Markey converted a four-point play when he was fouled shooting a three in the final seconds.

The Eagles heled a narrow edge on the glass 33-28 but the Blue Jays shot better from the floor, 54.3% to 44.8%.

Juniata will close their season on the road at Susquehanna, Saturday at 2:00.
