Greyhounds Narrowly Edge Eagles

John Kelly

BETHLEHEM, Pa.- The Juniata men's basketball team couldn't quite complete the comeback as Moravian managed to hang on to win, 53-46, Saturday afternoon.

Moravian opened the scoring with two foul shots, Marcus Hall (York, Pa. / Trinity) scored inside on a pass from Nathan Markey (York, Pa. / Central York) and John Kelly (Philadelphia, Pa. / Roman Catholic High School) followed with a bucket in the paint of his own to make it 4-2. The teams traded scores, with Kelly scoring again and Hall scoring inside for the second time, this time off a Jake Holsopple (Duncansville, Pa. / Hollidaysburg) assist.

The Eagles went scoreless over the next four minutes until Markey found Cameron Keck (Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro) for a layup, which made it 11-10 with under nine minutes remaining in the half. Keck drilled a three a few possessions off another Markey assist following a Kelly offensive rebound. Markey got himself on the board with a layup off a pass from Nate DaCanal (Johnsonburg, Pa. / Elk County Catholic).

The Greyhounds stretched the lead to 13 with a little under four minutes to go.

Keck's jumper with two minutes remaining cut the deficit to seven, but the Greyhounds scored the final bucket of the half on a three as the Eagles trailed by ten at halftime.

The Greyhounds held the Eagles at bay for the first 10 minutes of the second half as the deficit fluctuated between four to nine points until two Keck foul shots brought JC within three.

Markey's free throw followed by Nick Rigby's (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon H.S.) foul shot pulled Juniata within one with under six minutes remaining in the contest. Moravian countered with a foul shot of their own and three, but Keck found Markey for a three-pointer that brought the Eagles back within two, 44-42. The teams traded misses, and Hall got fouled after corralling an offensive rebound. He went to the line and made two foul shots to tie things at 44 with just over two minutes to go in the game.

Moravian nailed a three, and Keck scored inside to make it 47-46, but Juniata didn't score in the final minute and a half as the Greyhounds closed on a 6-0 run to ice the game.

JC had a 46-32 edge on the glass, but Moravian was more efficient shooting the ball, 36.2% to 28.3%.

Juniata will host Catholic, Wednesday at 7:00.
