Late Run Sparks Men's Basketball to Victory at Goucher

TOWSON, Md.- The Juniata men's basketball team pulled away in the final five minutes to get the win at Goucher, 60-52, Wednesday evening. 

John Kelly (Philadelphia, Pa. / Roman Catholic High School) opened the scoring with a putback layup two minutes into the game and following a Gopher three scoring inside again, this time off an assist from Marcus Hall (York, Pa. / Trinity). The Gophers converted a jumper and three before Kelly score his third bucket of the game, this one a jumper off a Nate DaCanal (Johnsonburg, Pa. / Elk County Catholic) assist. Following a stop, Cameron Keck (Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro) found Nathan Markey (York, Pa. / Central York) for a layup to tie things at 8-8.  

The teams traded misses for a few minutes until Griffin LaCarte (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) found Nick Rigby (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon H.S.) who splashed a three-pointer. The teams traded makes for a bit, with the Gophers pulling within one again at 14-13. Hall scored inside off a Markey assist, Jake Holsopple (Duncansville, Pa. / Hollidaysburg) score don back to back possessions and Keck converted a triple as Juniata surged ahead by 10. The Gophers got back within three, but Juniata managed to get the lead back to 10 at the half as Kohl Bernarding (Cochranton, Pa. / Cochranton H.S.) tallied the final bucket of the half with a jumper to make it 32-22.  

Goucher slowly clawed their way back within four, with a midrange jumper making it 39-35 with just under 14 minutes to go. Neither team could find the bottom of the net for the next the next three minutes until a foul shot and then a three brought Goucher even at 39-39 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game.  

The teams traded points with LaCarte's foul shots providing the points for the Eagles as the teams remained tie at 41-41 and Juniata called a 30 second timeout. Markey found Holsopple for a three, and on the next offensive possession Markey made two foul shots. Goucher made a jumper, and DaCanal set Holsopple up for his second three. But the Gophers got within one with a three and two free throws with exactly five minutes showing on the scoreboard.  

From that point, the Eagle defense clamped down as JC closed the game on a 11-4 run with Keck scoring seven of the 11 for the Eagles to bring the victory back to Huntingdon. 

Juniata shot better from the floor, 50.0% to 36.0% and from three, 46.7% to 35.0% while also holding a 33-26 edge on the glass. 

The Eagles will travel to Moravian, this Saturday at 2:00.
