Eagles Edge Royals in Overtime

Grace Kuszmaul

HARRISONBURG, Va.-The Juniata field hockey team won in overtime on a Grace Kuszmaul (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) penalty stroke, 2-1, at Eastern Mennonite University Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles controlled the first quarter as they held a 5-0 advantage in shots and a 1-0 edge in penalty corners, but couldn't find the back of the cage.

The Royals eventually struck first, with three and half minutes to go in the half as they took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Nine minutes in the third, Sara Deetz (Gloucester City, N.J. / Gloucester City) was first to a loose ball and fired it past the keeper to tie the score at 1-1.

The teams held a 4-4 advantage in shots in the final frame but neither team could find a winner so the teams headed to overtime.

Juniata controlled the overtime, as a shot from Grace Alexander (Mifflinburg, Pa. / Mifflinburg) drew a defensive save from the Royals and Kuszmaul's first shot was blocked. Thirty-seven seconds later the Eagles were awarded the penalty stroke that Kuszmaul sent past the right side of the EMU keeper to give JC the win.

The Eagles will travel to the outskirts of Philadelphia to take on Haverford, Wednesday at 7:00.
