Shaffer, Parker, and Bauer earn gold at Jim Taylor Invitational

SELINSGROVE, PA. – Juniata College men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Jim Taylor Invitational hosted by Susquehanna University Saturday and was led by Angela Shaffer, Ceth Parker and Nicholas Bauer’s first place finishes.

Angela Shaffer (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock) grabbed first place in the women’s high jump with a 5’33/4” leap, two inches higher than her closest competitor. Shaffer also took second in the 100m hurdles finishing in just 16.37.

Ceth Parker (Sabillasville, Md./Catoctin) won the 5000m run with a time of 15:01.61, nearly 14 seconds faster than his competition, beating his fastest collegiate outdoor time of 15:29.53 set at the 2010 Landmark Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, while also beating the previous Juniata record of 15:17.37.

Senior Nicholas Bauer (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) claimed first in the men’s long jump with a 21’ ¾” leap.

On the track for the women, sophomore Katrina Woods (Shirleysburg, Pa./Mount Union) placed fourth in the 5000m run with a 17:56.88 time, and Caroline Morgan (Havertown, Pa./Havertown) finished the race in 18:27.01 for eighth. Woods' time of 17:56.88 beat the Juniata College record of 18:28.65 previously set by Jessica Koenig at the 2011 Jim Taylor Invitational. 

Senior Erika Brown (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) placed third in the 400m hurdles with a 1:08.82 time, and placed third in the high jump with a 4’ 9 ¾” finish.

For the women’s field events, freshman Chelsea Beaver (Shamokin Dam, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) launched the shot put 34’ 8 ½” for fifth place, and freshman Kylie Berrena (Petersburg, Pa./Juniata Valley) threw the javelin  and even 102’ for fifth place.

Senior Aaron McCoy (Muncy, Pa./Hughesville) shaved significant time of his personal best in the 200m dash as he earned fourth with a 22.71 time, beating his PR time of 2.91 set at the 2011 Landmark Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. 

Freshman Tyler Mandley (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) took fourth in the 400m hurdles with a 57.82 time and in the 110m hurdles with a 16.43 time.

In the field events for the men, Justin Herr (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) claimed third in the triple jump with a personal best 41’ 7 3/4”.   

The Eagles travel to Goucher College for an invitational next Saturday, March 7, in Towson, Md.
