Men’s Tennis Tops Catholic in Landmark Opener

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Fresh off its home win over Randolph-Macon on Wednesday, the Juniata men's tennis team played its first Landmark Conference match of the season on Saturday against Catholic. The Eagles swept singles play on their way to a 7-2 victory over the Cardinals.

 

JC trailed 2-1 upon the completion of doubles competition. The lone victory came from the pair of Matyas Kohout (Prague, Czech Republic / Gymnasium Jizni Mesto) and Owen Grafe (Newton, Mass./Newton North) as they knocked off Rob Alexander and Jon Purowitz 8-4.

 

In singles play, two matches ended in retirement. Dean Polisena (Adelaide, Australia/Saint Ignatius) was ahead 3-1 in his match with Juan Lorido when Lorido bowed out. Daichi McAuliffe-Uchida (Wantage, NJ/High Point Regional) won his first set against Purowitz 6-3 and was ahead 2-0 in the second set when Purowitz retired. Other winners included Roy Liberman (Montevideo, Uruguay/EIHU), Kohout, Dan Ansel (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), and Grafe. Both McAuliffe-Uchida and Ansel improve to 5-2 on the season.

 

Juniata hosts Moravian next Saturday at the Raffensberger-Brumbaugh Courts. Match time is at 1:00 p.m.
