HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Juniata College currently sits 97th out of 436 active NCAA Division III institutions on the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Learfield Sports 2011-12 Directors’ Cup standings, released late Thursday.
Juniata has accumulated 114 points thus far in the academic year, with women’s volleyball being the sole points-earner in the fall with 64 points and women’s basketball grabbing 50 points for its NCAA Championship 2nd Round appearance in early March.
“Our top 100 ranking among the nation’s Division III athletic programs mirrors our top hundred ranking as one of the nation’s best liberal arts colleges and speaks to Juniata’s commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the field of play,” said Juniata Athletic Director Greg Curley. “We are all very proud of the efforts and accomplishments of our student-athletes, coaches, and support staff; their work is reflective of the quality of the academic-athletic experience Juniata offers.”
Juniata, the only Landmark institution in the top 100, currently sits atop the other conference institutions in the Directors’ Cup standings. The University of Scranton boasts 98 points for 114th, with its men’s basketball team most recently earning 73 points for its NCAA Championship Quarterfinal appearance.
The United States Merchant Marine Academy placed 120th with 25 points earned during the fall season and 65 points from the winter for a total 90 points. Moravian College, 128th, earned all of its 80 points during the winter season with men’s indoor track & field talking 29.5 points and the women’s indoor track & field squad earning 50.5. Catholic University of America is 132nd with 78 points, while Goucher College, Susquehanna University, and Drew University failed to earn any points so far in the 2011-12 academic year.
NACDA and Learfield Sports present the Directors’ Cup to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA athletics. Points are awarded based solely on participation and finish at NCAA championship events.
The year’s final rankings will be released upon the conclusion of all spring championships in early June.
