Eagles Soar Past Owls into Second Round of the NCAA Tournament

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The #2 Juniata women's volleyball team opened their 41st consecutive NCAA tournament run in style as they swept Keene State, 3-0, Thursday evening inside a boisterous Memorial Gymnasium.

Mackenzie Coley got the first point of the game for JC with a kill in the middle of the Owl defense, and Kiona Sky Rousset-Hernandez followed with two straight aces. Keene got on the board, and with three of the next four points, they got within one early at 4-3. Kennedy Christy went off the block for a kill, and Coley tacked on two more to get the lead back to three. An error handed the Owls the next point, but the Eagles kept their foot on the gas. Two errors from the visitors, a kill from Courtney Williams, and two from Audrey Muth. Juniata continued to steadily build their lead with an ace from Olivia Foley and a kill from Lily Podolan helping get the lead to double digits. Later, with the score at 19-9, Podolan went off the block for a kill, Keene State committed two attack errors, Christy added a kill of her own, and McKenna Walker's ace gave JC set point. Keene State fought off two set points before Christy ended things, 25-11.

Set two was competitive, with the Eagles maintaining a four-point lead at 9-5. Kills from Brianne Carmody and Williams, and an error by the Owls was proceeded by another Williams kill before she combined with Carmody for a block. An ace from Sydney Ohl made it 14-5. The Eagles cruised the rest of the way, with an Abbey Telesz ace handing JC set point. Two points later, Williams ended things with a kill over the top of the Keene middle, 25-11.

The Eagles had their most effective offensive set in the third as they hit .438 with 17 kills as they won the match on a Carmody kill to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

The Eagles will take on fourth-seeded SUNY Cortland, who defeated the fifth-seed Rowan, Friday at 7:00 inside Memorial Gymnasium.
