Eagles Sweep Tartans to Open Wid Guisler Invite

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Juniata women's volleyball team swept three competitive sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-23) against Carnegie Mellon on Friday evening for the team's 14th straight victory.

The sides traded points early in the first set before a series of errors from Juniata opened the door for a 9-5 Carnegie Mellon advantage. An attack error from the Tartans shifted possession to the Eagles, who scored seven straight on two Courtney Williams kills and two Kennedy Christy kills for a 12-9 lead. The middle stages of the first set saw a high rate of errors from both teams as the Tartans narrowed the margin until drawing even at 21. A couple of Mackenzie Coley kills propelled the Juniata past Carnegie Mellon 25-21.

The Tartans gained a 7-4 advantage in the second set before Juniata went on two separate 4-point runs to regain the lead at 14-9. Carnegie Mellon got three points back on a service error, and two kills to remain within two points in a back-and-forth series that put the set at 20-18 in favor of Juniata. The Eagles went on a five-point rally with kills from Lily Podolan, Williams, and Christy and a Kiona Sky Rousset-Hernandez service ace to win set two 25-18.

The Eagles went up 3-1 in the third set before Carnegie Mellon earned four straight points for a 5-3 lead. The lead was swapped back and forth until Juniata earned four straight themselves for an 11-7 advantage. The Tartans went up 13-11 but soon fell back as the Eagles gained their biggest lead of the set at 21-14. Juniata reached set point with a 24-18 lead, but three attack errors and two kills put the Tartans down one when Juniata took a timeout. The Eagles returned to the court and wrapped up the match with a Podolan kill.

Juniata wraps up the Wid Guisler Invitational on Saturday with a match against Smith at 11:00 am and Senior Day festivities for the tournament's finale against York at 6:30 pm.
