Eagles Close Invitational with Pair of Sweeps

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata women's volleyball team picked up a pair of victories on day two of the Juniata Invitational as they swept the University of Mary Washington, 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-11) in the morning before sweeping Messiah, 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-16), in the evening Saturday inside Memorial Gymnasium.

The opening set in the first match against the University of Mary Washington saw the Eagles take the first three points on a kill from Kennedy Christy and two aces from Kiona Sky Rousset-Hernandez. The Eagles nursed the lead for a bit, with the visitors pulling even at 10-10. A kill from Audrey Muth and two consecutively from Lily Podolan pushed the lead back to three. The teams traded points for a bit, with Mary Washington eventually getting within one again at 19-18. The Eagles closed the match on a 6-1 run, with Sydney Ohl ending the set with an ace.

Set two saw the Eagles hit a red-hot .476 as they managed two separate runs of 6-0, including the final six points of the game, to take set two with authority, 25-12.

The third set was more of the same as the Eagles put together runs of six straight points and later nine consecutive points to blow the final set wide open. With the score at 22-11, two kills from Mackenzie Coley gave Juniata match point, and Aly Reardon ended the match with a kill of her own.

In the opening set of the second match against Messiah, with the score at 5-6, the Eagles rattled off six straight off three errors from the Falcons, a kill from Muth, and two aces from Olivia Foley. Messiah never got closer than four the rest of the way, with a kill from Courtney Williams ending the set 25-15.

Messiah held on to a small lead midway through the set at 14-15 before the Eagles took over. A kill and two aces from Christy made it 17-15, and the Falcons called timeout. JC just kept coming as Christy notched another ace, Messiah committed an error, Christy tallied another kill, Coley and Muth partnered for a block, and Coley teamed up with Abbey Telesz for another. One more Christy ace made it 23-15. The Eagles wound up taking set two on a Messiah error.

The third set saw the Eagles get ahead by four early and never look back, maintaining the lead and using a five-point surge late to reach match point at 24-15. A Coley kill ended the match and the tournament, 25-16.
