HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata women's soccer team came up just short in their home opener as Chatham stole a 2-1 win with a goal in the 88th minute, Thursday evening at Gibbel Stadium.
The Cougars broke through 19 minutes into the contest when a softly cleared cross bounced to a Chatham defender, who lobbed it into the right side of the goal.
Juniata controlled the next 10 minutes, winning two corners and getting a shot off as a Mariah McDonald header went over the goal.
An offside call in the final five minutes of the first half prevented a dangerous opportunity for Chatham as the Eagles went into the half down 1-0.
In the second, the offense picked up for the Eagles as they managed four in the second half before they found a game-tying goal in the 83rd minute.
Ashley McWilliams sent a ball in off a corner, and Helen Chavez headed it home to make it 1-1.
A few minutes later, the Cougars found a winner in the 88th minute on a blast from outside the box that went over the outstretched hands of Cati Besch.
Juniata will look to rebound this Saturday at Westminster at 5:00.
