Susquehanna Shuts Down Eagles Despite Strong Third Quarter

HUNTINGDON, P.- The Juniata women's basketball team hosted the Susquehanna River Hawks on Saturday afternoon to face the orange and black for the first time since the 2019-2020 season. Today, despite the Eagle's efforts, they came up on the wrong end of a 69-57 score.

The first quarter was detrimental to the Eagle's success as the River Hawks put up 21 to begin the game. Cassie Mock (Martinsburg, Pa. / Central Martinsburg HS) contributed to the nine points by the Eagles by beginning the first few minutes with a three. Mock had nine points and added three assists.

Susquehanna pushed their biggest lead in the second quarter, being 18 over the Eagles with a score of 33-15. As halftime struck, the Eagles cut the lead to 13 points with a score of 35-22.

The Eagles came back after their halftime break with a switch flipped, ready to protect their home court. Juniata's defense went to work on the Susquehanna offense, only allowing eight points for the River Hawks in the third quarter. This allowed the Blue and Gold offense to score 18 points while Haily Sherman (Marysville, Pa. / Susquenita HS) put on a show on both ends of the court. Sherman led the Eagles with 20 points on the day.

Sarah Betts (Hawk Run, Pa. / West Branch Area HS) hit a three before the final seconds of the third quarter to lock in the score at 43-39, Susquehanna.

Unfortunately, Susquehanna strung together good plays and capitalized at the foul line as they tallied 26 points in the fourth quarter. The Juniata women's basketball team will return to Memorial Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 19th, with a tip-off time of 7:00 pm to take on Catholic.
