Women's Basketball Captures First Conference Win

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata women's basketball team returned to Memorial Gymnasium on Wednesday night as the Goucher Gophers headed into town. The Eagles showed out against the Gophers while showing off some deep range to secure a 62-50 win.

The Eagles held the Gophers to six points in the opening period and jumped out to a 21-6 lead through the first quarter.

Goucher fought hard in the second quarter to catch the Eagles by putting up 15 points as Juniata was up 37-21 at the half.

The Eagles started a three-point storm as the second half began, putting up four three-pointers in a matter of three minutes, starting with Grace Long (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin HS).  Averie Hess (Jersey Shore, Pa. / Jersey Shore HS) mirrored Long and hit a three-pointer less than a minute later. Steph Emert (Hoovesville, Pa. / North Star HS) added to the rainfall with the third. Long brought it full circle and took it upon herself to add three more points to the scoreboard. Long recorded 13 points on the night.

Emert snagged a rebound, took off down the court, and found Haily Sherman (Marysville, Pa. / Susquenita HS). After a perfect feed from Emert, Sherman put up a layup while catching an and one foul. Eagles put up 23 points in the third.

Cassie Mock (Martinsburg, Pa. / Central Martinsburg HS) had a great selfless night on the floor after putting up eight assists and six points for the Eagles. Hess totaled 15 points with Sherman on her tail at 13.

Juniata had a drought offensively in the fourth but was able to hold off the Gophers to secure their first conference win of the season 62-50.

The Eagles will host Susquehanna this weekend with a tip-off time of 2 pm.
