Eagles Offensive Rebounding Sparks Victory at Elmira

ELMIRA, NY.- After the short Thanksgiving break, the Juniata women's basketball team was victorious at Elmira in a back and forth affair that saw JC win, 62-53, Wednesday evening.

Elmira led the first quarter of the game by one point. Juniata put up 16 points with help from lead scorer Haily Sherman (Marysville, Pa. / Susquenita High School) paired with Grace Long (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin), Cassie Mock(Martinsburg, Pa. / Central Martinsburg), and Averie Hess (Jersey Shore, Pa. / Jersey Shore) who all converted from behind the three-point line.

Juniata tallied 17 points in the second quarter while picking up their defensive effort, holding the hosts to just 11 points and 23.1% shooting from the floor. Kynnedy Miller (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon Area HS) joined the three-point party by knocking down two of her own. Miller totaled 12 points on the night, and Long also rang in 12 points on the Elmira floor while shooting a perfect 4-4 from the foul line.

The second half started with the Eagles starting strong and pushing their lead to nine on a Sherman layup off a pass from Long in the first two and half minutes. Elmira didn't fold and briefly took the lead back with just under three to play. The Eagles reclaimed the lead and were leading 45-42, heading into the final frame.

Elmira hung close throughout the fourth, and a three brought them within two with 4:49 showing on the clock. Long drilled a three off a pass from Sherman to quickly push the lead back to five.

Miller found Sherman for a jumper to make it 54-48 with a little under two minutes to play, and the Eagles made enough free throws down the stretch to get the win.

Sherman put up her third double-double of the year with 20 points and 16 rebounds, which included 11 offensive rebounds. Long added 12 points, eight rebounds, and four steals while Miller chipped in with 12 points. Mock did a little bit of everything as she tallied six points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.

The Eagles will return to Huntingdon on Saturday, December 4th, to host Moravian in their first Landmark Conference game of the year at 4:00 pm.
