Eagles Fall to Delaware Valley's Big Second Half

Eagles Fall to Delaware Valley's Big Second Half

HUNTINGDON, Pa.- The Juniata women's basketball team suffered a 78-69 setback Saturday afternoon on day two of the Juniata Tipoff Tournament inside Memorial Gymnasium.

Juniata had a massive first quarter as they piled up 28 points, with Haily Sherman (Marysville, Pa. / Susquenita High School) putting up 15 of them as Delaware Valley couldn't contain her. Juniata assisted seven of their nine buckets as the offense was humming. Cassie Mock (Martinsburg, Pa. / Central Martinsburg), Kynnedy Miller (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon Area HS) and Grace Long (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin) had two assists apiece.

The second quarter saw a total role reversal as the Aggies couldn't miss while it appeared a lid was put on the Juniata hoop. The Eagles managed 10 points to the visitor's 22.

In the final seconds of the half, Long drilled left-wing jumper off a pass from Emelie Nonemaker (Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg Area Senior High School) to send JC into the locker room up by one, 38-37.

Juniata jumped ahead in the third, with Long making two foul shots, Sherman scoring on a jumper off a Mock assist, and Averie Hess (Jersey Shore, Pa. / Jersey Shore) scoring inside.

Another Hess layup after a Mock three had JC up eight, 49-41, with under seven minutes to go in the quarter. The Aggies took control of the game with a 17-2 run, leading 58-51. Hess found Sherman for another jumper in the final 10 seconds of the quarter to bring the Eagles within five.

The fourth quarter saw Juniata get within three twice, with the second time on a Miller three of a pass from Mock, but they couldn't pull even with Delaware Valley. The Aggies kept JC at bay to get the 78-69 win.

Juniata has a quick turnaround as they will host Penn-State Harrisburg, Tuesday at 5:00.
